Excerpt

“You want to be wooed, huh? I’m not sure I know how to do that. You may have to tell me what to do.” The cocky grin he’d been wearing suddenly became softer, his eyes twinkling, and I caught a flash of the boyish charm I’d fallen for.
“Oh no, I’m not explaining anything to you. You should know by now, Mr. Almighty-I-Am-Alpha. Just know this—if you don’t get it right … you’re a dead man.”
He let out a rich, throaty laugh, and the sound made the soles of my feet tingle. In fact, it made everything tingle, and I braced myself. I was about to get ravished.
I didn’t move a muscle as he advanced, or resist as he finally gathered me into his arms. My eyes instantly closed and I tilted my head—waiting. Everything was still, our surroundings dimmed to a quiet hush.
He moved slowly, brushing his mouth against mine softly, tenderly. It was almost like a whisper, the feel of his breath fanning gently over my skin, and when he repeated the motion, goose bumps erupted.
Even though I knew it was coming, the touch of his tongue tracing my bottom lip had me leaning into him, my hands gripping the top of his pants to steady myself. I don’t know how long we stood there for, his mouth barely caressing mine before the mood changed, and he made his move.

Book Two – Forget Me Not

Official blurb

Only a fool would think they could steal from a werewolf …

She is further shocked by the intruder’s claim she may not even be the true mate of the Mystic Wolves Alpha. Accusations start to fly, leading to her new enemy being granted asylum, and this is just the beginning of trouble.

Relying on the reassurances of Mason and the support of her friends and Pack, Darcy soon falls under attack. Suspicions are raised, and with no other choice, she must flee with Devlin to safety where hopefully they can untangle the lies hidden behind the use of magic. Time is quickly ticking away, leading to a showdown where everything is on the line.

They need to uncover the truth before it’s too late, or once again, Darcy will need to fight to hold onto her dreams.

Excerpts

“Excuse me?”
I looked the woman up and down. It irritated me how she hung on Mason, as if she had every right in the world to do it. I growled and stepped forward, ready to go to war for the man I loved. I didn’t even care about whatever excuse she would give for invading our lives with her false presumptions—I was pissed. I could feel the change happening, and I smiled. Judging from the way she blanched, I knew my fangs must have shown.
“Darcy, stop.” Mason’s voice broke through my anger, and luckily for him he’d moved away from her. “This is Amber, and it’s not what it seems.”
“Who is this, Mason? And why does she think she has a hold over you?” Amber asked.
The syrupy sweetness of her tone set my teeth on edge, and I launched myself at her.

Book Three – Testing Fate

Official blurb

Nothing burns as bright as the flames of the refiner’s fire.

Moments after hearing the Council sentence her enemy to life imprisonment for attempted murder and illegal use of magic, Darcy is whisked away by the Fates—accused of tampering with destiny. The cherished dream she shared with Mason has been called into question, placing doubt about whether they are actually true mates. To resolve it, a price must be paid—the Heart or Death—a grueling series of tests designed to reveal a person’s worth.

The stakes are high and Darcy finds herself facing the unknown in conditions that leave her more vulnerable than she’s ever been. Separated from Mason and her Pack, with Devlin as her only companion, she is pushed to her very limits. She must succeed—or lose everything.

Will she crumble under the pressure or emerge stronger for testing fate?

Excerpt

“But, do you truly understand what you’re saying? Are you willing to put Darcy and your Pack through more attempts like Amber’s? Are you willing to fight a challenge with every suitor that comes along?”
“Yes. If that’s what is needed, then I will beat them all!” Mason’s body stiffened with determination and I could only imagine what his wolf was experiencing below the surface. Male werewolves were dominant and extremely territorial. I had no doubt Mason would fight to the death, as many times as he needed to, in order to keep me by his side.
“I am sure you would, young Alpha. But are you willing to have Darcy do that as well? Will you be able to watch her fight to the death? Is your pride worth the risk? Are you willing to test fate?”

Book Four – Forever Changed

Official blurb

Waking up after an amazing night with her new husband and mate, nothing could've prepared Darcy for the epic bombshell Devlin dropped—explaining her heritage and revealing truths that completely blow her mind. When all she wants is to settle into marital bliss and pack life, Darcy's world is once again thrown into turmoil, forced to face a challenge that may very well destroy everything she’s fought so hard to preserve.

Not one to sit back and watch the one he loves more than life itself in danger, Mason immediately formulates a plan of action—taking a small group of trusted friends across the United States in the hot pursuit of answers. Time is running out, though. With every attempt to control Darcy's wild magic thwarted, and the dark presence of evil dogging their every move, Mason and Darcy will be left with no other choice but to make a stand—fight or risk losing everything they cherish most.

Decisions will be made. Love will be pushed to breaking point. Mason and Darcy face their greatest challenge, one that will leave them … FOREVER CHANGED.

Excerpt

“There’s no need to challenge. If Devlin needs time, let’s give it to him.”
“He lied to you,” Mason blasted. “All this time he knew there was a threat and he said nothing. He knew why your connection to me was so sporadic and instead of easing your confusion, he continued with this masquerade.” Mason glared over my shoulder at Devlin. “Do you even understand what that did to her? Do you? She doubted herself. She doubted her wolf. She thought she was inferior, and all this time you knew why!” Stepping around me, Mason shoved his friend. “You knew! How could you watch her falling apart with uncertainty and say nothing?”
Daniel quickly moved, just in case Devlin retaliated. As much as my heart was breaking over being kept in the dark, watching the pain between the two of them killed me. What happened next would define their future relationship and, as a result, mine.

What would you do if the man you loved became one of your
greatest enemies? Would your love be enough to save him?

I opened my mouth to argue. Knowing me like he did, he quickly interrupted.
“No. You need to get as far away as possible, and no matter what happens, you don’t come looking for me. If there’s a cure, I’ll find you. Promise me.”
“But I don’t want to leave you.” I knew I sounded desperate, but I didn’t care. We rarely spent time apart—the idea appalled me.
“Promise!” he shouted, a tremor moving through him.
“Okay, I promise!” I cried. I watched as he convulsed and his eyes began flickering again.
“Now run, Bri. Run!”

Excerpt

“I wonder what you taste like, sweet Aithne. That question has tortured me.”
A butterfly commotion rose in my stomach as the flittering turned my insides into a riot of nerves. He was going to give me my first-ever kiss. My hands rested on my stomach fortifying my resolve as his hands gripped the side of my arms. His thumbs moved in soft circles and caused a faintness to come over me.
Hadrian was so close, his breath fanning lightly over my skin. I watched his descending mouth—his lips. I was a storm of emotions—sensations—as the anticipation grew.
As he pulled me closer I held onto his shirt front and offered a silent plea that my knees wouldn’t fail me. His lips were a mere fraction from mine. All I needed to do was creep up on my tiptoes, and the moment would be complete.
We lingered there, the sound of our breath mingling as our eyes locked. He shifted slightly, and traced a delicate pattern across my cheekbone. “I shouldn’t.” His other arm encircled my waist. “But how can I not?”

Excerpts

#1

“Ready?” he asked, brushing his hair away from his face, aware I was checking him out. His hand beckoned for me to approach and I let out a soft sigh. He stepped away from the table, waiting for me to come stand in front of him, sandwiched between him and the table. “I’m going to have you break, okay?” He moved in closer and I prayed my legs wouldn't give out. I could feel every inch of him pressed against me.
“Okay,” I stammered. Oliver chuckled low in my ear and I tried not to shiver from the sensation. Bending me forward with his body, he showed me how to position the stick, his arm alongside mine. We fit perfectly.
“Still with me, Liberty?” he asked. I didn't want to move. We were so connected, the position so intimate, I was sure I’d melt on the spot. Andrew had tried holding me this close and all it did was make my skin crawl. It was the complete opposite with Oliver. This made me feel reckless.

#2

“Liberty . . .”
The mere mention of my name heightened the intensity between us. He didn’t finish his sentence, instead choosing to trace his finger down the side of my cheek. His hand trailed lower, over my shoulder, and down my back before returning to my hip. The action sent a pulsing shiver through me and I blushed. I couldn’t help it.
“I don’t know what I like more. Your smile, laugh, or how beautiful you look when you blush.” He caressed the side of my face again like he was unable to stop himself. “I catch myself saying things just to see if I can make your skin flush this pretty pink.” He brushed his fingers through the side of my hair, the gesture so tender that it sent another ripple of trembles through me.
“You shouldn’t say things like that, Oliver,” I murmured.
“Probably not, but I can’t help it. Maybe I am dangerous.” He moistened his lips and moved a fraction closer.
“Definitely.” The word was a faint whisper and I leaned in.
Oliver was going to kiss me. There was no doubt about it. I ignored the warning voice in my head that told me this was going too fast. I gave in to the moment, thinking of nothing but how incredible being kissed by the one person who had managed to turn my insides into a riot of emotions was going to feel.
“Tell me to stop.” His breath fanned across my lips.

#3

“You’ve made my job near impossible, Liberty.” His hand moved from my lower back, brushing up my spine. I didn’t bother hiding my shiver.
“I did?”
Our eyes locked. “The second you showed up, I didn’t want to leave your side. Then when you were dancing . . .” Oliver tightened his hold of me and turned us around.
“I was hoping you noticed.” My gaze dropped enough so I stared at his mouth—his perfectly kissable mouth.
“With you in the room, no one else exists. Of course I noticed.” He slowed down the pace of our dancing until we were swaying on the spot. “You were wrong, you know? When you said I was dangerous when we first met. The way I’m feeling right now with you in my arms, and the way you’re looking up at me . . . you’re the one who’s dangerous. My heart was at risk the moment I saw you sitting alone at that table.”
It was now or never. The timing was perfect, the chemistry between us demanding immediate action. I didn’t wait for him to act. I rose on my tiptoes and kissed him.
This kiss would forever go down in my memory as my first. It was how it should’ve been—all consuming and life changing. Everything faded away the second my lips touched his and he responded. There was no thought of being inexperienced. I instinctively knew what to do, almost shattering when my mouth opened and his tongue touched mine.
He tasted completely forbidden. With the pulsating thump of the music in the background and my thudding heartbeat, my hands escaped into his hair. There was no getting enough of him. I was kissing him with everything I had, matching him stroke for stroke, indulging in what he was offering.
The moment was far from innocent. His hand held me firmly, one lowering to my behind where he drew me in, pressing me against his body. I felt everything—sensations—both physical and emotional. We moved together, touching. When he broke away long enough to cup my face with his hands, he left me somewhat dazed.
My lips felt bruised. I could still taste him, and staring at his lips, I wanted more.
“Liberty.” He all but breathed my name and the walls around my heart crumbled completely.

The Mirror by John A Heldt

THE MIRROR by John A. Heldt
Series: Northwest Passage No. 5
Published: March 1, 2014

The Story: On September 11, 2020, Ginny and Katie Smith celebrate their nineteenth birthday at a country fair near Seattle. Ignoring the warnings of a fortune-teller, they enter a house of mirrors and exit in May 1964. Armed with the knowledge they need to return to their time, they try to make the most of what they believe will be a four-month vacation. But their sixties adventure becomes complicated when they meet a revered great-grandmother and fall in love with local boys. In THE MIRROR, the continuation of THE MINE and THE SHOW, the sisters find happiness and heartbreak as they confront unexpected challenges and gut-wrenching choices in the age of civil rights, the Beatles, and Vietnam.

My Review: I am so sad to see this series at an end.  I have LOVED every book!!

John has brought such an amazing end to the Northwest Passage!  I've loved every book he's written, and each one has so much detail, so you know a lot of research has gone into each book.  The Mirror doesn't disappoint.  What started with Joel Smith, has ended with his twin girls experiencing some of what he and his wife did.  And the people that Katie and Ginny meet?!  I can't tell you what happens in that!  But wow, I just loved how this book went.

Get More From Your Books

 Get More From Your Books

Why do people read for pleasure? Actually, let's back up: fewer and fewer people read for pleasure with every passing year. According to the New York Times, "Americans — particularly teenagers and young adults — are reading less for fun." At the same time, employers are reporting that their employees are lacking basic reading comprehension skills while reading scores are declining.

But for those who do read, the factors that all combine to create the right environment for truly pleasurable reading are various and sometimes hard to pin down. During some stages of our lives, we're just too busy to set aside time for pleasure reading; often times, watching TV or a movie seems like less work and equally as rewarding. But we're missing out on so much when we stop reading for pleasure. A good book and a pleasurable reading experience can enhance our lives in so many ways.

When people really love a book, it's usually because it completely swept them away and transported them to another world. It's because the events in the book were exciting, and the characters were compelling in some way. Sometimes, we have to ignore our inclination to think of reading as a chore we once had to do for school and begin to embrace reading as a source of excitement, adventure, imagination, escape, romance, and even eroticism.

Reading paranormal romance books is a great way to kill several birds with one stone. Reading is a great relaxer, it improves intelligence, reading comprehension skills, and has even been shown to increase empathy. Reading paranormal romance can pull you out of the everyday monotony of life, captivate you, and turn you on.

The beauty of reading romance, rather than watching it in film version (either romance films or pornography), is that you get to fill in details for yourself, as you'd like them to be, with your own imagination. You also get to know the characters intimately, so that the sex scenes are even more exciting. Finally, reading romance can inspire you to try new things in the bedroom. These books include everything from dirty talk to BDSM to role play.

For example, after reading a BDSM-themed erotic book, perhaps alone, perhaps aloud to your partner, you and your partner may feel inspired to try some safe and consensual BDSM yourselves! As Adam & Eve writes, literature-inspired kits can help you "explore your senses and enter the untamed world of bondage play." Other kinds of role-playing games will probably come to your mind as you read more and more of these kinds of books. Bringing new situations, toys, or ways of talking dirty to the bedroom can help keep things interesting, as well as keep you reading. It's a win-win situation!

Other kinds of erotic literature include books such as J.R. Ward's vampire paranormal romances (you are all familiar with your favorite BDB to fantasize about), which are thrilling on several levels; Kresley Cole's books; Indie Author Gracen Miller's Road to Hell Series is hot enough to melt chocolate (YUM) and even dinosaur-themed erotica. All these books and more can transport you to new worlds and help inspire your imagination... and your bedroom activities.

All of Us were Sophie by Resa Nelson

Synopsis for All Of Us Were Sophie
What if the only way you could save your own life was to kill yourself?

Someone is trying to kill Sophie Rippetoe, and she has no place to hide.  But Sophie has a unique option.  Her husband designed and built a duplicator machine to make exact copies of complicated and sophisticated machine parts.  She knows how the duplicator works.

Will it work for people?  No one knows.

There’s just one problem:  the duplication process destroys the original.  The only thing Sophie knows for sure is that trying to make copies of herself will end up killing her.

Sophie isn’t sure who’s trying to kill her or why – but she has her suspicions and has gathered some evidence.  Before she takes the leap of faith to use the duplicator on herself, she creates a trail of clues, hopeful that at least one of the Sophies she creates will figure it out in time to save herself.

Guest PostMixing Genres
By Resa Nelson

I’ve been a fan of mixing genres in short stories and books for a long time.  I think it’s because I read different genres when I was a child, including fantasy, science fiction, mystery, and horror.  As far as I was concerned, they were all just interesting stories.

I write the novels that I want to read.  Mysteries always hold my attention and make me want to keep reading.  So I think that’s why there’s some type of mystery in every book I’ve written.  This is even true for my four-book Dragonslayer series, an epic fantasy/adventure series.  But my purest mystery to date is my newest book, All Of Us Were Sophie, a murder mystery with a science fiction premise.  The funny thing is that it began as the opposite:  a science fiction novel with a murder mystery premise

What’s the difference?  When I first wrote this novel 25 years ago, the focus was on the science of human duplication, the idea of making an exact copy of yourself (with all your life experiences and personality intact) in an instant.  The murder mystery lingered in the background.  That novel sold, but my deal with the publishing house fell through before it could be published.  Because science fiction ideas tend to become obsolete quickly, I thought the book had no hope because it was a time when publishers had suddenly decided that buying any author’s first novel was too risky.  So I threw away the hard copy, deleted the soft copy, and forgot about Sophie.

Fast-forward 25 years.  New circumstances in my life made me think of All Of Us Were Sophie again.  In fact, I couldn't stop thinking about it.  I'd been right about the science fiction becoming obsolete.  My idea had once been fresh and new, but those days are long gone.
But I still liked the idea of mixing the science fiction and mystery genres.  A new thought dawned on me: I knew keeping the focus on the science fiction idea would no longer work.  But what if I switched the mix?  What if I made the novel a traditional murder mystery that just happens to have a science fiction premise?

In other words, while science fiction fans will be interested, I wrote this novel for fans of murder mysteries and thrillers.  Even though I did my homework and have a grasp of the science behind human duplication, I spend the tiniest amount of time explaining the science and keep it simple, short, and sweet.  My fans tell me my novels are page-turners, and I want nothing to slow them down!

I'd never been able to forget Chapter One.  I began there and re-wrote the novel from scratch.  After 25 years, I feel like I finally got the right mix.  I don't think All Of Us Were Sophie should ever have been a science fiction novel.  At its heart, it always wanted to be a murder mystery with a science fiction twist.

About the Author:
Resa Nelson’s first novel, The Dragonslayer’s Sword, was nominated for the Nebula Award and was also a Finalist for the EPPIE Award. This medieval fantasy novel is based on a short story first published in the premiere issue of Science Fiction Age magazine and ranked 2nd in that magazine's first Readers Top Ten Poll. The Dragonslayer's Sword is Book 1 in her 4-book Dragonslayer series, which also includes The Iron Maiden (Book 2), The Stone of Darkness (Book 3), and The Dragon’s Egg (Book 4).
