Today we are honored to have author Kristie Cook of the Soul Savers Series join us. She is here to give us a some background on what goes into the research she does for her series. But most importantly, THE MEN! hehe....so keep on reading!!! THANK YOU KRISTIE FOR BEING HERE TODAY WITH US!!!
Genesis is a bit different from the other Soul Savers books. Although the fantasy world I created is the same, the real world is not. After all, it takes place over 2000 years ago, around 200 B.C. So it required a lot of research to understand life in Greece during that era. For each stop along the release tour, I’m sharing something I learned and how it ties into the story.
On this tour I’ve talked about women and children, but today we get to explore men! Think hard-bodied warriors and demi-gods. Nice, huh? Well, not quite. Unfortunately, the traditional men of Ancient Greece were basically chauvinistic pigs, unless you were in Sparta, in which case, women were trained just as hard as men and given more freedom.
The rest of Greece, however, was very male-dominated. In fact, only men could become citizens (and not even all males, at that). Only men could go to the marketplace (except for female slaves in some cases). Only men could attend most festivals except those specifically for women and a few highly religious ones. Basically, only men could be seen in public.
Men spent their time working during the day and discussing politics with other men at night in their own designated parts of the homes where women were not allowed to enter. They were allowed to enjoy activities such as wrestling, horseback riding, drinking parties and traveling (in fact, they were rarely home). Only men could
attend the Olympic Games because the athletes participated in the nude (although in later times, women who owned a horse in the chariot race could attend). So, a little disappointing that men had all the fun and even more disappointing that, except soldiers or poorer men who did their own labor rather than owning slaves, most were not built like Spartan warriors. Genesis to the rescue!
The men in Genesis have a different view of women’s roles than the traditional Greeks, although in certain cases it’s not any better. But they are all hot and some of the best soldiers with the bodies to match. How hot are they? Read to find out.
