Lover Unbound (Black Dagger Brotherhood # 5)

Vishous, Son of the Bloodletter
The brother I fell in love with...

Review: Lover Unbound
Publish Date: September 25, 2007
Publisher: Signet
Genre: Romance, Fantasy

The Story: (J.R. Ward) In the shadows of the night in Caldwell, New York, there’s a deadly war raging between vampires and their slayers. And there exists a secret band of brothers like no other—six vampire warriors, defenders of their race. Now, the cold heart of a cunning predator will be warmed against its will…

Ruthless and brilliant, Vishous son of the Bloodletter possesses a destructive curse and a frightening ability to see the future. As a pretrans growing up in his father's war camp, he was tormented and abused. As a member of the Brotherhood, he has no interest in love or emotion, only the battle with the Lessening Society. But when a mortal injury puts him in the care of a human surgeon, Dr. Jane Whitcomb compels him to reveal his inner pain and taste true pleasure for the first time- until a destiny he didn't choose takes him into a future that cannot include her.

My Review: Yes, I know, I'm quite the fickle person.  Zsadist stole my heart (because I totally was not expecting it!), but the awesome thing about BDB? There's enough brother love to go around, and let me tell you: Vishous is the brother I fell in love with!

Vishous has the most raw brain power of all the brothers.  He's an absolute genius, speaking sixteen different languages and can crack a computer faster than an egg. Vishous also has visions of the future, can hear the thoughts of others, and his left hand glows light a nightlight.  You want to avoid that eerie, glowing hand, because one touch you you're toast... or ash actually.

Vishous only claims one true friend, and that's Butch.  He doesn't really do the relationship thing, having been abused as a pretans and as a young adult vampire; he's never really known affection.  (As with Zsadists, we discover a lot about V from a series of flashbacks.)  When V is injured, and ends up in the hands of human doctor, Jane Whitcomb, his entire world shifts.  He falls fast and hard for Jane, but Jane refuses to surrender to Stockholm syndrome (Yep, the vamps kidnap her).

Things finally start to look good for V and Jane, but destiny steps and with a..... well a viscous twist.   Fate brings this proud warrior to his knees due to a particular tie with the Scribe Virgin (the species' deity).  Luckily, this is a romance novel and as such, there is a happily ever after for the characters!

I absolutely loved this book, and I couldn't help but fall in love with Vishous. He's an intelligent, tough, proud warrior... and as Mindy says... he's just naughty.... but you have to read the books, I'm not telling any more than that...

Quote: [V and Jane] V- "Look...you were supposed to com with me, okay?"
Jane- "Oh. Really.  So I had a 'Jack Me Now' sign pinned on my ass that only you could see?" (Lover Unbound page 165)

Cindy claims Vishous as her favorite of the brothers. I have to say, he is definitely one of my favorites (with Zsadist being tied with him, and Rhage in a close second).
But shhhhhh, don't tell Cindy I said V was one of my favorites!

Have you read Lover Unbound?  What do you think of Vishous?  Please leave comments below!

My Rating:
(Again, one Five "star" review is just not enough...)

You think you can talk about V being yours without me knowing it? M.I.N.E. I do not share kindly. You've been warned!

Oh man, who told Cindy? Seriously?

Now look, cousin mine, Vishous is just too awesome for me to pass up. You can "mine" it all you want, I'm still staking my claim too!

(BTW, everyone, this is a long standing argument between the 2 of us. It will probably continue for eons to come...but it's all good. LOL)

Lol V also happens to be my favorite brother. The dynamic between Jane and V is just too great to pass up. I love that they are both smart so they can keep up their witty banter. Plus a little bondage never hurt anyone.

@Alexa
Well, it never hurt anyone more than they wanted to be hurt ;)

Bring on the whips! What are the lyrics to that Rhiana song? "Sticks and stones may break my bones but chains and whips excite me?"

Hehehe...He's still mine. Watch it now!

Julie- Lol I guess you are right. I just meant I think a lot of people are turned off by V's story because of the bondage part of the story.

lol! I always think of V when that song comes on the radio.

Vishous is running close to a tie for me with Zsadist as my favorite Brother. Z beats him out by a small margin!

Can't wait for next Tuesday!
