Lover Mine (Black Dagger Brotherhood # 8)

Tehrror, son of Darius (aka John Matthew)
One of those you want to protect, even though you know he could do serious damage own his own...

Review: Lover Mine
Publication Date: April 27, 2010
Publisher: NAL Hardcover
Genre: Romance. Fantasy

The Story: (J.R. Ward) In the darkest corners of the night in Caldwell, New York, a conflict like no other rages. Long divided as a terrifying battleground for the vampires and their enemies, the city is home to a band of brothers born to defend their race: the warrior vampires of the Black Dagger Brotherhood.

John Matthew has come a long way since he was found living among humans, his vampire nature unknown to himself and to those around him. After he was taken in by the Brotherhood, no one could guess what his true history was- or his true identity. Indeed, the fallen Brother Darius has returned, but with a different face and a very different destiny. As a vicious personal vendetta takes John into the heart of the war, he will need to call up on both who he is now and who he once was in order to face off against evil incarnate.

Xhex, a symphath assassin, has long steeled herself against the attraction between her and John Matthew. Having already lost one lover to madness, she will not allow the male of worth to fall prey to the darkness of her twisted life. When fate intervenes, however, the two discover that love, like destiny, is inevitable between soul mates.
My Review: Now this Brother is my favorite Brother. Although I love all of the other ones, because, c'mon on, how could you not, JM is the one who stayed with me the most, long after I was done with the books. And not just his book, every book that he was in. There was something about the scrawny  young man who was looking out for Mary. And then when he found out what he was, how grateful he was to Tohr and Wellsie for taking him in and basically treating him like their own. And even after his transition, his loyalty to those he considered his family, and the fact that he went after Xhex even when he thought she didn't want to be with him.
But I digress...
John Matthew has come a long way since we met him as a pretrans in Lover Eternal. He went through classes, went through his transition and became part of the Black Dagger Brotherhood. He also lost his heart to Xhex, the first time he ever laid eyes on her.
Now, Xhex is missing, taken by Lash, and JM feels it is up to him to get her back. Not caring that the last time they were together, Xhex didn't want to get emotional for what she thought was John's own good. Being half sympath, Xhex didn't want to inadvertently hurt John.
Once Xhex is found, worse for wear after being tortured at the hands of Lash, she tries to close herself away and break from everyone including John. What Xhex doesn't know is that JM has his own painful history to deal with.
Together, they rely on each other to face what has happened to each of them, and it brings them even closer than before.
We also find out the origin of John Matthew. He doesn't remember much of his history, and we don't know it either, until we find out that he is Darius reincarnated. Which explains his initial reaction to Beth. I, for one, had an inkling earlier on in the series, that this was what was going to happen, but there was always just that shadow of a doubt. I was happy to see that I was correct. Not just because it confirmed I was right, but we finally got to see what happened to Darius after his visit with the Scribe Virgin at the end of Dark Lover. Darius's past is shown simultaneously with John's present through flashbacks and journal entries, and reflects what is going on with John how, and how he is getting through it.

Another good thing about Lover Mine is all of the side stories going on. We see many of the other characters, what they are going through, and even get to see Mary after a long time away from public eye. Rhage must have been keeping her all to himself.
One of my favorite back storylines (as well as many other people I have talked to) is the Qhuinn and Blay saga. We know that Blay has always had feelings for Qhuinn, but what if those feelings were reciprocated? Could it be possible? And even if it was, would he act on it? Or will Qhuinn stay away from Blay and try and let him find happiness elsewhere... maybe even with Qhuinn's own cousin, Saxton? I really want to see what the future holds for these two. This storyline broke my heart.

Payne also makes a reappearance, not just as a back player, but as a force to be reckoned with, and is set up nicely to continue her story in Lover Unleashed.
