Lover Awakened (Black Dagger Brotherhood # 3)

Zsadist, Son of Ahgony
The brother that stole my heart...

Review: Lover Awakened
Publish Date: September 5, 2006
Publisher: Signet
Genre: Romance, Fantasy

The Story: (J.R. Ward ) In the shadows of the night in Caldwell, New York, there’s a deadly war raging between vampires and their slayers. And there exists a secret band of brothers like no other - six vampire warriors, defenders of their race. Of these, Zsadist is the most terrifying member of the Black Dagger Brotherhood.

A former blood slave, the vampire Zsadist still bears the scars from a past filled with suffering and humiliation. Renowned for his unquenchable fury and sinister deeds, he is a savage feared by humans and vampires alike. Anger is his only companion, and terror is his only passion—until he rescues a beautiful aristocrat from the evil Lessening Society.

Bella is instantly entranced by the seething power Zsadist possesses. But even as their desire for one another begins to overtake them both, Zsadist’s thirst for vengeance against Bella’s tormentors drives him to the brink of madness. Now, Bella must help her lover overcome the wounds of his tortured past, and find a future with her…

My Review: Zsadist is, in a word, a sociopath.  If you have not read the series, I can imagine what you are thinking.... I put at the top he stole my heart, and now I say he's a sociopath, I must be a few sandwiches short of a picnic....

But let me explain. Zsadist was kidnapped as an infant, and he was forced to be a blood slave to a woman who used him for more than his blood for 100 years.  The scarring from this was more than physical.  His hatred extends to everyone, females especially.  His twin, Phury, is as closse as he allows anyone, and that's not much.  Until Bella comes along.

It takes very special circumstances, and a very special female vampire to bring Zsadist out of the pit of hell in which he lives.  Bella has been through a traumatic experience of her own, though not to the links of what Zsadist suffers, she may be only one that is able to reach the small amount of "humanity" left in Zsadist.

I loved the first to novels in this series, but this one literally knocked the breath out of me.  Ward uses a series of flashbacks to give the reader a sense of what Zsadist suffered as a blood slave.  Zsadist was not born evil, he never experienced the nurturing of a loving family, instead he spent a century serving the needs of a female vampire that cared about nothing but her own pleasure.  That he was able to have a happily ever after type ending is nothing short of a miracle.

Quote: [Zsadist to Phury] "You are the male I might have been.  You are the potential I had and lost.  You are the honor and strength and the kindness she needs. You'll take care of her. I want you to take care of her." (Lover Awakened page 262)

Mindy says Z is her favorite- she loves his dark side and his fierce love, Z is dangerous yet gentle.

This book is by far my favorite of the series. I too was surprised at how much I love Z, after being introduced to him in the first 2 books.

I love how strong Bella was. I admire her.

This is not just my favorite books in this series but one of my favorite romance books ever. I have to agree with ~D regarding Bella. She was so strong and made such a good match for Z.

He's so broken when we first meet him, not unlike real abuse victims. I loved that even though what Bella went through was far from as vile as his damage he never pulled the "oh please that's nothing compared to what *I* had happen" card. He was so furious, so protective. So humble in his way. By far my favorite brother.

LOL Julie! I love the use of the double rating system.
In the first two books, I really didn't like him. To find out why he was like he was and what he had to go through. It just broke my heart. I really thought that he was going to be the Brother for me, until I fell for another one.

You actually can't go wrong with any of the Brothers, truthfully. They are all males of worth, and no matter which one you pick, you know you have a good one.

You are making me want to go back and reread this entire series! I do like Z but I feel the whole dark male with the bad past has been done a lot so he is not my favorite brother.
