Dark Lover (Black Dagger Brotherhood #1)

Wrath, Son of Wrath
(Technically, this should say: His Royal Highness Wrath, Son of Wrath)
The brother that started the obsession...

Review: Dark Lover
Release Date: September 6, 2005
Publisher: Signet Eclipse
Genre: Romance, Fantasy

The Story:(from J.R. Ward's website) In the shadows of the night in Caldwell, New York, there's a deadly turf war going on between vampires and their slayers. There also exists a secret band of brothers like no other - six vampire warriors, defenders of their race. Among them, none relishes killing their enemies more than Wrath, the leader of the Black Dagger Brotherhood...

The only purebred vampire left on the planet, Wrath has a score to settle with the slayers who murdered his parents centuries ago. But when one of his most trusted fighters is killed- orphaning a half-breed daughter unaware of her heritage or her fate - Wrath must usher the beautiful female into the world of the undead…

Racked by a restlessness in her body that wasn't there before, Beth Randall is helpless against the dangerously sexy man who comes to her at night with shadows in his eyes. His tales of brotherhood and blood frighten her. But his touch ignites a dawning hunger that threatens to consume them both…

My Review:  As the first of the Black Dagger Brotherhood novels, Dark Lover introduces the reader to a secret world of vampires in Caldwell, NY.  The Black Dagger Brotherhood is an elite force that protects the vampire world from their nemesis: The Lessening Society, undead humans who seek to destroy all vampires.

Wrath is the rarest of vampires- the last purebred on the planet.  He is also the heir to the throne, which over the last couple of centuries he has refused to establish; he would much rather wage war against the race's enemy.  When fellow Black Dagger Brotherhood member Darius asks a favor of Wrath (that turns out to be his last), Wrath honors his brother by granting his request.

Enter Beth, daughter of Darius and the human he had fallen in love with a few decades before.  Life hasn't always been peachy for Beth, and she seems to be going through a particularly rough patch of luck at the novel's opening.  As Wrath and Beth's worlds collide, Beth faces many dangers, not the least of which is that a half-breed, she may not survive the transition into an adult vampire.  Wrath may very well be her only hope of survival.... but the Lessening Society is working hard to destroy the Brotherhood, and Wrath's own chances of survival take a grim turn.

As the beginning to a series, Dark Lover ROCKS.  Ward artfully introduces the characters and plot lines.  Wrath is one of those ultimate alpha male types with a flaw that makes all the more desirable, since he refuses to let it hinder him.  Beth is a a fabulous heroine that is a perfect match for Wrath.  Dark Lover is action-packed, and let's not forget the steaminess factor! By the end of the book, I couldn't help but want to read more.  I was happy with how things worked out for Wrath and Beth, but I wanted to know what was in store for the other brothers!

Random Quote: [Wrath to Beth] "I thought you deserved... I don't know. A date. Or something.  Something normal."  He laughed harshly as she looked at him with surprise.  "Dumb idea, I know.  I should stick to what I'm good at.  I'd be better off teaching you how to kill." (Dark Lover page 193)

Have you read Dark Lover? What did you think?  Is Wrath your favorite brother?  If you haven't read it yet, do you plan to?  Leave comments below!

I have read it. And even though Wrath is not my favorite brother his book is the start of an amazing series. Wrath is a badass and his only weakness is Beth. Gotta love that! I think my favorite part is where he shows up to her apartment smoking red smoke and he blames the red smoke for how is body is reacting to her. lol
